The new Garmin Astro with DC-40

My friend, Glen, just got his new Garmin Astro with the DC-40 collars!  Just in time for me to "borrow" them for a field test next month chasing Chukar.  I'm interested in seeing what difference there is between the DC- 30 and 40.  I'll be running the -30 and have been using it for  a year now with fantastic results.  I hope the -40 will achieve the same range and faster lock on times.  I heard they upgraded the charger, too, which was a weak point in the system.  Will keep you posted!

The DC 40 has a cradle that is cup or barrel shaped. It depends on the plastic to hold its form to charge. It's the same concept of the Tritronics G2 and G3 series charger. It's not a snug fit like the tritronics charger. This has a blue flashing light when it charges. If its not in the cradle just so it won't charge. I am not impressed as compared to Tritronics. As far as aquiring the collar I am not sure what to compare it too. It took about 30 seconds to aquire it.

The poly collar that simulates the e-collar ones is nice. The unit is about the same size as any e-collar receiver. I am curious to see if I can slide my tritronics collar and beeper collar on it as well. A plastic zip tie is used to brace the anntena to the collar. That has to be cut and then the other hardware can slide on then a new zip tie needs to be run though a collar hole.

On a small Brittany to put all the bling on, the GPS, E-Collar and Beeper you might run out of dog neck.

I don't have my e-collars on hand so I can't tell if they resolved the issue of the DC collars cycling on the tritronics beeper. I will let you know.

The good news is that we may not need a beeper anymore. WE'll see about that. Your dog has about $1000 worth of electronics hanging around its neck. "Reward for return of dog collar- keep the dog." LOL. I can see it now!
